Treatment for constipation

 Constipation home remedies

Constipation is a condition in which you may have

Fewer than three bowel movements a week. Stools that are hard, dry, or lumpy. Stools that are difficult or painful to pass a feeling that not all stool has passed

However, people can have different bowel movement patterns, and only you know what's normal for you.

Constipation is not a disease, but may be a symptom of another medical problem. Constipation may last for a short or long time.

Constipation is common among all ages and populations in all countries.  About 16 out of 100 adults have symptoms of constipation. About 33 out of 100 adults ages 60 and older have symptoms of constipation.

Symptoms of constipation may include

  • Fewer than three bowel movements a week
  • Stools that are hard, dry, or lumpy
  • Stools that are difficult or painful to pass
  • A feeling that not all stool has passed
A part of the things we take as food enters the body through digestion and the rest becomes faeces. Dietary fiber is not digested in the stomach and is considered the main component of stool. A healthy person should produce an amount of stool per day that fills the stool (bowel) bag at least once, requiring one bowel movement per day. There is no chance of constipation if you have a regular bowel habit.

If the stool is stored in the stool for a long time i.e. if the stool is not passed regularly, the stool becomes hard day by day due to absorption of water from the stool and the stool becomes hard day by day. The only natural solution to all of this is to consume more laxative foods, mainly vegetables, fruits, milk-curd and whole grains, such foods in sufficient quantity. These food items are also the main ingredients of healthy food.

Fiber

Depending on your age and sex, adults should get 22 to 34 grams of fiber a day. Older adults sometimes don’t get enough fiber because they may lose interest in food.

Talk with a health care professional. Be sure to add fiber to your diet a little at a time so your body gets used to the change.

Good sources of fiber are

· whole grains, such as whole wheat bread and pasta, oatmeal, and bran flake cereals
· legumes, such as lentils, black beans, kidney beans, soybeans, and chickpeas
· fruits, such as berries, apples with the skin on, oranges, and pears
· vegetables, such as carrots, broccoli, green peas, and collard greens
· nuts, such as almonds, peanuts, and pecans

Fruits:
Several fruits have been used for centuries to treat constipation due to their high fiber content. Apricot-nuts, Figs-figs, Poppy, Pineapple, Guava, Peaches, Prunes etc.

When first starting fiber-rich foods, start small. Especially those who are not used to consuming high fiber foods before. Otherwise, stomach gas may be produced and discomfort may increase. However, within 1-2 weeks, the production of gas in the stomach decreases.

Plenty of water

You should drink water and other liquids, such as naturally sweetened fruit and vegetable juices and clear soups, to help the fiber work better. This change should make your stools softer and easier to pass.

Drinking enough water and other liquids is also a good way to avoid dehydration. Staying hydrated is good for your overall health and can help you avoid getting constipated. Ask a health care professional how much liquid you should drink each day based on your size, health, activity level, and where you live.

Physical activity:

Regular daily 15-20 minutes of walking, swimming, running, cycling, gardening helps relieve constipation. Milk and curd must be consumed as laxatives. A little more sweet potato is very beneficial. Constipation can be relieved by consuming sufficient quantity of kachu, kachur muthi, vine, data and leaves.

Foods to avoid or in very small amounts:

Refined rice foods, cheese, fried foods, sweets, sugar, jaggery, salty foods, beef, all types of fast food (junk food), soft drinks, unripe bananas, alcohol, Coffee etc. It is very scientific and natural to use pan toilet instead of commode or high toilet. It also reduces the incidence of hemorrhoids. You will be very relaxed in the toilet. Also, do not try to apply any force. Do not wait more than five minutes after going to the toilet. Don't delay going to the toilet if you have a rush. Under no circumstances should you wait without going to the toilet. It is best not to use medicine/dos to cure constipation.  Grinding, kneading, blending of fibrous foods breaks down the fiber and creates a sticky substance which is considered to be very harmful for constipation. Although whole grains are rich in fiber.
